In rural Kenya, a silent revolution has been happening for decades. Every week, thousands of women gather under the shade of a tree or in village halls to pool their savings. These groups, locally called Chamas, are the heartbeat of the local economy, especially for women who are marginalized from other income generation activities. But for many survivors of Gender-Based Violence (GBV), these circles—once meant for support—have become a source of exclusion.
For example in Kisii and Nyamira Counties, where intimate partner violence rates soar to nearly 56%—dramatically higher than the national average—the tragedy is doubled by economic exclusion. A survivor escaping violence often finds herself hitting an "invisible wall": she is missing from organized groups, lacks a credit history, and is locked out of formal financial services. At Ustawi Kenya, we believe that you cannot truly empower a survivor if she remains a financial ghost.
Inclusion by Design: Building Sanctuaries, Not Just Systems
This crisis demands a multi-dimensional response, which is why the Verified Inclusive Pathways (VIP), a Kisii Innovation Lab innovation is powered by a unique strategic partnership between Kisii Innovation Lab, Ustawi Kenya, and partner Microfinance Institutions (MFIs). This initiative is a marriage of cutting-edge technology, deep-rooted community mobilization, and formal financial certification.
Through our Inclusion by Design model, we are intentionally layering safety into the fabric of finance. While Ustawi Kenya leads the charge in community mobilization and trauma-informed GBV safeguarding, our MFI partners work alongside the Kisii Innovation Lab to provide the technical "seal of approval" needed for transformation. We want these chamas to be the first line of defense—spaces where a woman can disclose distress through a "coded alert system" while her financial records are being digitized and verified for her future.
Evidence for Action: The Power of a Digital Identity
The core innovation of the VIP inovation in our Evidence for Action approach. Driven by the technological expertise of the Kisii Innovation Lab and the rigorous verification standards of partner MFIs, we aim to migrate paper table banking records into a verified digital platform.
For a woman who has lost everything to violence, this digital footprint is her ticket to independence. By having MFIs certify these records, we establish a credible foundation for credit histories that formal banks recognize. By leveraging these digital tools alongside survivor-centered advocacy, we intend to unlock at least KES 5 million in credit, proving that when MFIs verify the potential of the marginalized, we unlock the prosperity of the entire community.
Social Innovation: A Replicable Blueprint
We are often asked: "Why not just build a new bank?" Our answer is simple: Social Innovation starts with what already exists. By strengthening the social capital of the chama and linking it to the formal banking sector, we ensure that empowerment is not a temporary grant, but a permanent community asset.
The VIP innovation is a call to move beyond crisis response toward sustainable reintegration of marginalized individuals into formal financial systems. It is a testament to what happens when tech innovation, grassroots movement-building, and formal financial institutions work in sync.
We invite you to be part of this movement. Whether as a donor, a technical partner, or a financial institution, your support helps us bridge the distance between the frontline and the formal economy. Join us, alongside the Kisii Innovation Lab and our partner MFIs, in transforming these community hubs into engines of safety and self-sufficiency—because true Ustawi (prosperity) only happens when no one is left behind in the dark.
